One person dead, one injured after accident on Route 28 in Columbia

COLUMBIA, N.Y. (WKTV) - State Police in Herkimer are investigating a 2 car fatal motor vehicle accident on Route 28 near the intersection of Sarafin Road in the Town of Columbia.

The accident happened shortly after 3 pm. on Tuesday, with crews from multiple agencies responding. According to 911 officials, Route 28 was closed down between Jordanville Road and Columbia Center as emergency personnel attended to the scene.

State Police say a vehicle operated by Conrad Lupardo, 70, of Richfield Springs, was traveling south on Route 28 when another vehicle operated by Steven Allen, 48, of Ilion collided head on with him.

Authorities say Allen's vehicle failed to keep right and crossed the center line into the southbound lane where Lupardo was traveling.

Upon impact Lupardo's vehicle exited the road off the west shoulder, rolling over an embankment.

Herkimer County Coroner Harry Enea pronounced Conrad Lupardo dead at the scene.

Steven Allen was transported by West Winfield Ambulance to a Utica Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

New York State Police Accident Reconstruction personnel were called to the scene and an investigation into the details of the accident is continuing.
