Cow corralled after getting loose on Route 5

NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV) - Numerous motorists along Route 5 in New Hartford were caught by surprise Thursday morning, as a loose cow tried to make its way through traffic.

New Hartford Police say a farmer was moving four cows in the area when one of the cows got out of the trailer they were housed in. Police were called to the scene, which they say is one of the busiest roads in the area.

In an environment as busy as Route 5, police say the animal became quite scared and at times, agitated.

The cow eventually made its way to Merritt Place in a residential area, where a farmer and those assisting him were working to wrangle the cow back to the rest of the herd.

Police then backed off, saying they realized it was best left at that point in the farmer's hands, especially now that the cow was out of the busy area.

However, police were still helping to direct traffic nearby due to all the chaos caused.

When the cow had made its way into the fountain at Veterans Park, multiple individuals lent a hand in helping corral or from the water.
