MARCY, N.Y. (WKTV) - According to the State Department of Transportation, a new traffic signal will be activated this week at the State Route 291 Bridge over Nine Mile Creek in the town of Marcy.

DOT officials said recent inspection of the bridge revealed deterioration in the structure which led to the decision to restrict traffic to a single lane. Local municipalities, emergency personnel and school officials, have been notified of the lane reduction on the bridge.

Beginning Thursday, September 20, 2012, variable message signs (V.M.S.) will be in operation warning local motorists of implementation of the full three-color traffic signal. The following week, the full three-color signal will go into operation and, at that time, traffic across the bridge will be restricted to an alternating single lane. The signal and lane restriction will be in place until further notice.

The actions taken on this structure will ensure safety, slow further deterioration of the bridge, and allow time to develop a longer term solution. The safety of the traveling public remains NYSDOT’s primary mission. Bridge safety is monitored through a thorough and rigorous inspection program.
