Shillelagh passed down to new Grand Marshal

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - It's not a walking stick, it's a shillelagh.

The symbolic scepter of St. Patrick's Day was passed down to Utica Fire Chief Russell Brooks Tuesday at Hotel Utica.

Bag pipes played and applause was plenty as the shillelagh was passed from the 2012 Grand Marshal, Pat Costello, to Brooks who is the 2013 Grand Marshal.

The ceremony was a part of a week's worth of events leading up to this weekend's St. Patrick's Day Parade.

Other events this week include the Irish Flag raising and the painting of the green line on Genesee Street.

Saturday's parade starts at 10 am.
