Despite the absence of leading scorer Ed Rosenburgh due to an emergency appendectomy on Monday, the No. 3-ranked Poland boys soccer team advanced to its second state Class D championship game in three seasons with a 2-0 win over previously-undefeated and No. 2-ranked Fillmore from Section V in the semifinals Saturday at the National Soccer Hall of Fame in Oneonta.
Jordan Potter scored Poland's first goal in the first half, putting in a body shot while knocking heads with Fillmore's goalie. Potter was shaken up but walked off under his own power, but the goalie was carted off on a stretcher as a precaution. He was moving his limbs while on the ground. The Tornados' second goal came late in the second half on a ground shot by Kenny Miller.
The Tornados, now 19-2-3, will face the team that beat them in the 2005 final, top-ranked Chazy, in this year's final Sunday at 1:00 at the Hall of Fame. Chazy beat Smithtown Christian 2-1 in overtime in the other semi.
Poland lost to Chazy 3-0 in the 2005 final; Chazy was also the No. 1 team in the state that year.
