In a matchup of the beast from the East and the best from the West, Skaneateles claimed the title of overall best in Section III, Division II high school hockey on Saturday, beating Whitesboro 5-2 in the championship game at the Utica Aud.

Through the first two periods, Whitesboro hung with Skaneateles despite being out-played and constantly on the defensive due to penalties, trailing 3-2 going into the 3rd. But the Warriors' inability to stay out of the penalty box finally caught up with them when back-to-back penalties erased a power play and gave a 4-on-3 advantage to the Lakers, leading to a Tory Cole goal at 5:13 that put the game out of reach.

The game started out well for Whitesboro, with the Warriors taking a 1-0 lead just 2:13 into the game on a fluke goal. Off a face-off in Skaneateles' zone, Dustin Farley hit the puck off the board behind the net, and it ricocheted in off the back of goalie Alex Richichi's skate. John Odell, though, was officially credited with the goal.

Skaneateles came back midway through the period, with Keith Buehler fed Kaj Beck-Anderson at 6:26, then fed Sean Morley exactly a minute later for another goal and a 2-1 lead after the 1st.

Whitesboro tied the game in the 2nd on a goal by Farley that was correctly credited at 8:21, but the Lakers re-took the lead with 1:31 left on a put-back shot by Cole. Skaneateles held on from there, finishing the scoring with an empty-net goal with 30 seconds left in the 3rd.

Cole finished with two goals while Buehler had a goal and three assists. Richichi finished with 17 saves, and Whitesboro goalie Jack Lambe--who was named Section III Division II East Co-Player of the Year before the game with Clinton's Chris "Boo" Snyder--finished with 24 saves.

Skaneateles is now 21-4-2; Whitesboro ends the season with the same record.
