The Herkimer County Community College men's lacrosse team might have stopped rival Onondaga's three-year winning streak during the regular season, but the Generals could not stop the Lazers' NJCAA Region III title streak on Sunday, as Onondaga won its fourth straight (all against Herkimer) 14-8.

After losing five straight games overall to Onondaga, Herkimer finally got over the hump with a 24-19 victory in their lone regular season meeting, snapping a 42-game overall winning streak by the Lazers. But if the result gave top-seeded HCCC more confidence going into the rematch, it was outdone by No. 2 Onondaga's desire for revenge as the Lazers came out with more energy and more physical play and sprinted out to a 7-0 lead in the 2nd quarter. HCCC finally got on the board with back-to-back man-up goals, but with another man-up advantage less than a minute later, the Lazers turned it around for a shorthanded goal and held an 8-3 lead at the half.

In the second half, every HCCC rally was answered by Onondaga. In the 3rd quarter, Herkimer scored two straight goals to get within 9-5, but the Lazers led 11-6 after the quarter. In the 4th, HCCC again got within four goals at 12-8, but Onondaga snuffed out any hopes of a comeback with two more goals to finish the scoring.

With the victory, Onondaga, now 16-1 and ranked No. 1 in the country, earns an automatic bid to and will be the top seed in the NJCAA national final four tournament at Nassau this coming weekend. Herkimer, now 15-2 and ranked No. 3 in the country, will also play in the tournament as an at-large team. The Generals received the No. 2 seed in the tournament and will face No. 3 Essex, which they just beat 17-14 last weekend, in the semifinals on Saturday at 3:00. Onondaga will face No. 4 Nassau in the other semifinal at 12:00. The championship game is Sunday at 1:00.
