Smith Repeats As Oneida Co. Champ; District V Tournament Set

Brian Sandler

ROME, N.Y. -- After shutting out New Hartford Friday night in the Oneida County American Legion Tournament winners' bracket final, Smith repeated the feat again in the championship on Saturday, winning 6-0 to claim its second straight title at DeLutis Field.

It was the third time in three meetings this season top-seeded Smith shut out No. 2 New Hartford, and it closed out a perfect league season for Smith at 22-0. Smith is now 23-2-1 overall.

New Hartford advanced to the championship by coming back to beat Utica in the losers' bracket final earlier in the day. Trailing 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning, New Hartford rallied for four runs to escape with a 7-5 win. New Hartford finishes league play 15-7 and is 20-9 overall.

Despite the outcome, both teams advance to the District V Tournament, which begins Wednesday at DeLutis Field and is a best-of-three format this year for both rounds. New Hartford will face Sackets Harbor Wednesday at 4:00 and Smith will face Ilion afterwards at 7:00, with the times remaining the same for the second game on Thursday and the third game (if necessary) on Friday. The championship games will be 4:00 on Saturday and 1:00 and 4:00 (if necessary) on Sunday. Should both first round matchups end in sweeps, the championship round will begin Friday.
