NEWBURGH, N.Y. -- As with the District V American Legion Tournament Finals this past weekend, Smith was once again on the brink of elimination after one game of the state tournament entering Thursday. But just like in districts, Smith stayed alive with a slaughter-rule victory, knocking out Horseheads 16-5 in seven innings at Delano-Hitch Stadium.

Smith, now 28-4-1, advances to play the loser of Anaconda vs. defending champ Melvin Roads Friday at 3:00. Smith beat Anaconda 2-1 earlier this season and lost to Melvin Roads in last year's state championship 13-0.
