Smith Advances to Championship Sunday

Sports WKTV

NEWBURGH, N.Y. -- For the second straight year, Smith will play on championship Sunday in the New York State American Legion Tournament after coming back to beat Anaconda in the final four 4-3.

Smith fell behind Anaconda 3-0 in the first inning but rallied with four runs in the bottom of the sixth to win 4-3. Joe Melioris threw a complete game for the victory.

The loss was Anaconda's first in the tournament (3-1), meaning if Smith (3-1) can beat Newburgh (3-1) in the semifinal Sunday at 11:00 a.m., it will only need to beat Anaconda once more to win its first title since 1998.

Smith's win marked the second time it beat the Indians this season. The Rome-based squad also beat the Saratoga-based team 2-1 in a tournament earlier this summer. Smith is now 30-4-1 overall.
