Smith Falls In State Championship In Extra Innings

Brian Sandler

NEWBURGH, N.Y. -- A second straight appearance in the New York State American Legion Tournament championship. A second straight difficult loss for a very different reason.

After losing the 2007 title game in a no-hit, mercy-rule 13-0 blowout to Melvin Roads, Smith saw a four-run eighth-inning lead disappear against Anaconda in this year's championship on Sunday, falling to the Indians in their third matchup of the season 9-8 in 11 innings.

Smith, which beat Anaconda in an earlier tournament 2-1 and again on Saturday night in the state tournament 4-3, had leads of 2-0, 3-1, and 8-4 after a three-run rally in the eighth. But the Indians rallied with a four-run at-bat in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game and send it to extras, then won it in the 11th with a game-winning bases-loaded sacrifice fly.

Smith, which beat host Newburgh in a morning semifinal 6-4 to make the championship, ends the season 31-5-1. Anaconda, now 42-9-1, advances to the Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament in Virginia.
