Hamlin: staying relaxed all part of the strategy
VANCOUVER, British Columbia (WKTV) - To say she's laid back is an understatement, but Erin Hamlin says it's all part of her strategy to medal - stay relaxed, but not too focused.
Erin was just minutes away from leaving Whistler for the Olympic opening ceremonies in Vancouver Thursday afternoon, but took a few minutes out of her schedule to talk about the upcoming games. "It's really easy for me to focus on what I have to do and stay relaxed and laid back, and I don't know why," she said. The Remsen native is treating the Olympics like any other competition. If she has any nerves, she's certainly not showing it. So far, she's been allowed two practice runs on the track in Whistler, and Hamlin is still looking to find her groove. "There is stuff to work on, for sure," she said. "I'm not totally comfortable yet, but hopefully I'll get there. We have four more runs before the race. The normal World Cup, that's all we get...so I should be able to get on it, I hope." Hamlin competes Monday night around 8 p.m. Eastern time, but viewers can catch her performance in high definition at 12:35 a.m. Tuesday morning on WKTV. Hamlin said it hasn't really hit her that she's at the Olympics, but after Friday night's opening ceremonies, she knows it will set in - all the while thinking about her support back home. "I'll never get used to seeing my name and face everywhere," she said. "But, it's awesome. It's great. I'm glad I can kind of bring the Olympic spirit back home and give them a positive thing to get excited about." Speaking of support, the entire contigent from Remsen that travelled to show their support has arrived in Whistler and is en route, including Erin's parents, to Vancouver for the Opening Ceremonies.
