S.U. wins first round game, Marquette up next

By WKTV News

CLEVELAND, OH (WKTV) - Syracuse mens basketball coach Jim Boeheim said Indiana State was one team he did not want to face in the first round of the NCAA Tournament because of all of its sharp shooters. Those sharp shooters were on fire early in the first half at Cleveland's Quicken Loans Arena, hitting three pointer after three pointer. But S.U. senior Rick Jackson and the rest of the veterans helped the orange build up a nice 18 point lead, however, they gave just about all of it away. ISU managed to get within four points midway through the second half, but freshman C.J. fair played a big role, hitting some big shots, and getting some big rebounds to hold off the Sycamores.

The final score, 77-60.

After the game, S.U. fans from Central New York who made the trip said it was a nail biter for quite a while. Tom Nelson of Utica traveled with his son, " I was very nervous in the first half, it was very close and only a few points apart and then we just blew them away in the second, it was just a terrific win."

The Orange next play fellow Big East opponent Marquette who upset Xavier. Round two is set for Sunday night at 7:45.
