HCCC Women Lose Final Rematch With Monroe

Sports WKTV

Last year, the Herkimer County Community College women's lacrosse team was swept by Monroe in the regular season then lost again to the Lady Tribunes in the NJCAA Region III tournament championship. This year, it was the same story, as the Lady Generals, again seeded No. 2, fell again to the Lady Tribunes, again seeded No. 1, 11-2.

Herkimer started the game well, opening with a 2-0 lead. But it was all downhill from there, as Monroe's defense shut down HCCC's all-important transition game and dominated ball possession on offense, taking a 5-2 lead at the half and never looking back. Herkimer only managed two shots in the second half and did not win a draw control in the entire game.

Despite the score, HCCC goalie Julie McAvoy was a standout with 26 saves, valiantly withstanding a Monroe peppering due to HCCC's lack of offensive possessions. She was named to the all-tournament team along with teammates Emily Niederman and Korrin Nash. Monroe's Amber French was named tournament MVP.

Monroe, now 13-2 and ranked No. 2 in the country, will return to HCCC this coming weekend for the NJCAA national final four tournament. The Lady Generals, 8-4 and ranked No. 5, will also play in the tournament as an at-large team. The semifinals are on Saturday and the championship is on Sunday.
