VERNON, NY (WKTV) - Word of mouth is a powerful marketing tool in the PGA TOUR player ranks, and it's brought a bevy of big names to Central New York for the second year of the Turning Stone Resort Championship.
After earning rave reviews across the board for both the Atunyote course and Turning Stone's hospitality last year, players who did not play in the inaugural tournament decided to check it out this year. The first-timers include such notables as 19-time TOUR winner Davis Love III, 13-time winner David Duval, 13-time winner Mark Calcavecchia, 10-time winner Steve Elkington, and top-ranked amateur Danny Lee.
Despite being here for only a couple days so far, Duval already agrees that this event is something special. After playing the Pro-Am event on Wednesday, he praised the layout of the course and Turning Stone's exceptional service to the players and their families. He said events like this one that make a big effort on the little details are the ones that grow and stay strong.
The tournament also features plenty of returning players who are excited to get the Atunyote experience again, including defending champion Steve Flesch and Joey Sindelar, a fan favorite from Horseheads. With a laugh, Sindelar cited a shrimp cocktail and filet mignon sandwich he obtained on the course during a Pro-Am as examples of how the Turning Stone Resort Championship goes above and beyond to impress and accomodate the players.
