WESTMORELAND, NY (WKTV) - In an opening-round matchup of teams with a combined 13-1 record, undefeated Westmoreland left no doubt about its dominance, blowing out Cato-Meridian in the Section III, Class C quarterfinals on Saturday 42-6.
In a game slowed by constant rain and muddy field conditions, the No. 2-seeded Bulldogs scored 35 unanswered points after No. 7 Cato-Meridian cut the score to 7-6 early in the second quarter, and the defense forced four turnovers to hold a team that averaged 38 points per game coming in to just one touchdown.
Running back Justin Becker was the go-to player for Westmoreland's offense, rushing 20 times for 154 yards and two touchdowns and catching four passes for 129 yards and two more touchdowns. Quarterback Dan Smith completed 5 of 6 passes for 135 yards and three touchdowns, Nick Matwijec caught a touchdown pass on offense and had two interceptions on defense, and Travis Rogers, Neal Baron, and Mike Flo each had eight tackles, with Flo adding a 35-yard interception return for a touchdown.
Westmoreland, now 8-0 and ranked No. 9 in the state in Class C, advances to play No. 3-seeded Herkimer in the semifinals at a site, date, and time to be determined on Sunday. Westmoreland beat Herkimer 26-6 in week 5.
The loss drops Cato-Meridian to 6-2.
