CHITTENANGO, NY (WKTV) - On a snow-covered Chittenango field more suited for cross-country skiing than soccer on Tuesday night, the top-seeded Whitesboro boys soccer team fell to fifth-seeded defending Section III, Class A champion East Syracuse-Minoa 1-0 in the semifinals.
Despite controlling the ball for the majority of the game and especially in the second half, the Warriors, a top seed for the first time ever, could not match a first-half ES-M goal scored by Adam Rowell with 9:39 remaining.
The game was marred with two minutes left in the second half when Whitesboro's Vinny Barbato and ES-M's Lenny Kerznowski got tangled up going for a ball and went down, then got up and went after each other. Both received red cards along with ES-M's Mike Cummings.
The victory sends ES-M, now 13-5-2, back to the championship round to defend its title. Whitesboro ends the season 13-3-2.
