UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Clinton's veteran hockey teams of recent years would not have given up a three-goal lead like this season's young Warriors did on Friday, but the team overcame the slip to beat the Warriors of Whitesboro 4-3 in a shootout in the opening round of the Utica College High School Hockey Classic at the Aud.
Clinton took a 3-0 lead in the first period on a goal by Steven Abdoo just 41 seconds in and two by Derek Smith just 21 seconds apart. Whitesboro scored two in the second period and tied the game late in the third on a score by David Abdou, sending it to overtime.
After two scoreless extra periods, the teams lined up for a shootout. The first round failed to decide a winner, meaning a shot-for-shot second round. There, finally, Clinton's Ken Grabeldinger, the sixth shooter to go, ended the game with a goal in the bottom of the frame.
The result, which is officially recorded as a tie for both teams since the shootout was only done because a team needed to advance in the tournament, sends Clinton to the championship game on Saturday where it will face rival New Hartford at 6:30. Whitesboro will face RFA in the consolation game at 1:00.
