Oneonta St. Men Hold Off Utica

UTICA, N.Y. - The Utica College men's basketball team lost to visiting Oneonta State 77-71 in non conference play Sunday afternoon. Doug Herring (Poughkeepsie/Poughkeepsie) netted a game-high 22 points and grabbed ten rebounds for the Pioneers while four different Red Dragons scored double figures to pace Oneonta.

The Pioneers have now dropped three straight contests for the first time since Feb. 17, 2007. With the loss they are now 3-4 overall this season. Oneonta has won seven of its last eight games and improved to 8-3 overall.

Senior guard Maurice Lane (Bakersfield, CA/West High) made a layup with 12:28 remaining in the first half to give Oneonta a one point lead, 12-11, one they would not relinquish for the remainder of the first half. Sophomore guard Troy Talbot (Brooklyn/The School for Legal Studies) scored six of his ten points over the course of 2:11 mid way through the first half as the Red Dragons went on a 9-0 run and led by as many as eight points, 19-11, with 10:39 to go in the first half.

UC outscored Oneonta 21-14 in the final ten minutes of the first half to cut the Red Dragon lead to just one point, 33-32, before the first half buzzer sounded.

Oneonta opened the second half on a 6-0 run in the first minute of play to extend its lead to seven points, 39-32, with 19:09 left to go in the contest.

Utica took the lead back after junior forward Robert Whyte (Pequannock Township/Pompton Plains, NJ) knocked down a foul line jumper at the 12:54 mark of the second half. Senior guard Doug Herring drained two free throws to extend UC’s lead to 47-44 with just under 11 minutes remaining on the game clock. Herring finished the day with a game-high 22 points and he also grabbed ten rebounds for the Pioneers.

Oneonta answered with a 6-0 run to take a three point lead, 50-47, with 10:18 left. UC junior swingman Patrick Goodman (Whitesboro/Marcy) followed with four straight points to give UC its final lead of the contest, 51-50, with 9:49 left on the game clock.

The Red Dragons went on a 12-2 over the next 3:27 to extend its lead to nine points with 6:22 to go. Utica was able to close the gap to as few as four points with seven seconds left in the game but that was as close as they would get.

Senior captain Ryan Morin (Altamont/Guilderland) scored a team-high 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting for Oneonta while division I transfer Brian Beckford (Brooklyn/Christ the King) fouled out of the game with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for the Red Dragons. Lane added 13 points, five assists and five rebounds while Talbot scored ten points off the bench.

Sophomore point guard James Patterson (Poughkeepsie/Poughkeepsie) scored 17 points and grabbed four steals for the Pioneers while Goodman and senior guard Justin Maxwell (Guilderland/Schenectady) each tallied eight points. Whyte closed out the evening with seven points and three blocks.

The Pioneers return to action Tuesday when they travel to Empire 8 Conference rival Ithaca College at 8 p.m. Oneonta looks to add to its three game win streak on Tuesday when they travel to New York University for a 7 p.m. tip off.
