MARCY, N.Y. - The SUNYIT women's basketball used a strong second half to pick up a 59-46 victory over Penn State Berks at the Campus Center Gymnasium Sunday. The win moved the Wildcats improve to 7-4 overall and 4-1 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference.
After entering halftime with the game tied at 24 apiece, the Wildcats caught fire in the second half, opening with a 20-4 run to take a 44-28 lead with 9:09 left to go. Penn State Berks would counter with a 18-10 run of its own to cut the Wildcat lead to nine with 3:20 left to play, but the Wildcats would not allow Berks to score from that point forward, closing out the game with a 5-0 run and picking up the 13-point victory.
Freshman Caitlin Cottell (Red Bank, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) shot 10-of-17 from the field and 4-of-8 from beyond the arc to finish with a season-high 25 points, and also collected six rebounds and three assists. Sophomore Taylor Topping (Bronx, NY/Preston) collected a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, while sophomore Tamara Williams (Rome, NY/RFA) grabbed 13 rebounds and scored six points. Rounding out the top performers for the Wildcats was senior Tiffany Holthouse (Clymer, NY/Jamestown CC), who registered eight points and six rebounds.
Dorian Bishop led Penn State Berks with 12 points, while Courtney Bailey grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds.
The Wildcats will next compete when they travel to D'Youville College on Wednesday, January 7. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
