UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - The No. 3-ranked Mohawk Valley Community College women's basketball team got all it could handle Thursday against Fulton-Montgomery Community College but pulled out a victory 74-65.
The game was hard-fought and often ugly, with MVCC taking 44 free throws (the Hawks made 28) and FMCC taking 28 (the Raiders made 14). The turning point came past the midway point of the second half when an intentional foul called on FMCC led to a five-point play for MVCC and fueled a 17-3 run, turning a three-point deficit into an 11-point lead.
Melissa St. Louis and Amanda Campusano led MVCC, now 16-2 overall, with 16 points each (St. Louis got her points at the free throw line, going 12-for-17). Natalie Mosconi led FMCC with 24 points and Laura Tisinger scored 17 before fouling out.
MVCC led 33-29 at halftime, but FMCC used a 14-2 run to pull ahead 47-39. MVCC responded with an 11-0 run to go up 50-47, but FMCC came right back with a 6-0 run to go up 53-50. That's when the Hawks threw down the hammer, with the five-point play making it 61-53 in their favor and the 17-3 run making it 67-56.
