UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Several collegiate wood bat summer league teams are ready to throw their first pitches of the season this week, including the Utica Brewers of the Eastern Collegiate Baseball League.
The ECBL, similar to the New York Collegiate Baseball League that has the DiamondDawgs in Little Falls, features collegiate players from all divisions from all over the country. Utica's competition includes teams in Sherrill, Rome and Oriskany.
As an incentive for baseball fans to come watch, admission to all of Utica's home games at Murnane Field this season is free. General manager Butch Russo says the goal is to provide a quality baseball experience for local fans.
"If you look to the Blue Sox days, they are guys that were drafted," says Russo. "These guys are potential draft picks in the near future."
Utica's home opener is this Sunday, a doubleheader against Sherrill starting at 5:00. For more information on the Brewers and the ECBL, click here.
