CICERO, N.Y. (WKTV) - Oneida softball proved its worth as the top seed in the Section III, Class A tournament on Saturday, winning its first championship since 2001 with a 5-1 victory over No. 3 Phoenix at Cicero's Gillette Road complex.
Oneida, now 20-4 and ranked No. 15 in the state in Class A, gets the benefit of Section III's first-round bye in the state tournament this year and will face the winner of Section X vs. Section II in the state quarterfinals Wednesday at the Gillette Road complex at 5:00.
After losing in the semifinals three years in a row, Oneida jumped right out in the championship with a two-run single by Kara Peck in the top of the first. Starting pitcher Beth Kann took it from there, allowing just an unearned run on two hits and striking out seven for a complete-game victory. Erika Williams hit a two-run double in the seventh to provide insurance.
