The nationally-ranked No. 12 Utica College men’s ice hockey team handed host Hamilton College its first loss of the season in a 5-2 Tuesday night victory at Clinton Arena.
The Pioneers led 2-0 at the end of the first period, with goals scored by Dave Werner and Bryce Dale. Jared Allison and Tony Wiseman assisted on the opening goals.
The Continentals answered right back with a short handed goal from John Gordon with 12:47 left in the second period. Hamilton tied it up with a power play goal from Jake Davis to make the game 2-2.
Senior forward Jared Allison tallied the game-winner just eight seconds later on an assist from Werner. Werner went on to net his sixth goal of the season with thirty three second left in the second period. Jeff Pappalardi and Mike Lane assisted on Werner’s second goal of the night.
Brandon Laidlaw closed out the scoring with a late third period goal. Dale and Matt Fitzgibbons assisted on the final goal.
Adam Dekker made 25 saves in his third win of the year, while Matt Crawson made 27 saves in net for the nationally-ranked No. 16 Continentals (3-1-1).
The Pioneers (4-2-2, 3-1-1 ECAC West) square off against Hamilton again on Friday night at the Utica Memorial Auditorium. The Pioneers host the McDonalds Teddy Bear toss for charity Friday, with all donations benefiting Toys for Tots, a program that will distribute the toys to local children throughout the holiday season.
