Sunday was twice as nice for local summer softball as the 16-and-under Utica Sluggers and 18-and-under CNY Shockers each won state fastpitch championships and advanced to their respective national tournaments.
The Sluggers, seeded 10th in the 16U tournament held at the John Kost complex in Rome, defeated the Nos. 2, 3 and 4 seeds en route to their title, finishing with a 5-3 win in the championship against the Oswego Pride. Brittany Pogoda threw a complete game and allowed only three runs (two earned) despite giving up nine hits.
In the 18U tournament held at Washington Mills Athletic Park, the top-seeded Shockers capped their title run with a 3-2 come-from-behind win over the Adirondack Diamonds. The Shockers trailed 2-0 heading into the sixth but tied it in that inning and went ahead in the seventh on an RBI by Bianca Brown. Jen True allowed two unearned runs over the first four innings and Stephanie Romanow finished with three perfect frames for the win.
The Utica Sluggers are made up of players from Proctor, Notre Dame and Whitesboro High Schools. The CNY Shockers are made up of players from Utica, New Hartford, Whitesboro and Oriskany.
Both teams will now prepare for the ASA Eastern Nationals in Sterling, Virginia. The tournament is August 6-9.
