LITTLE FALLS, N.Y. (WKTV) - Herkimer failed to beat Little Falls in all four of the teams' regular season meetings this season, but meeting again in the Herkimer County American Legion baseball playoffs on Tuesday, Herkimer scored seven runs in the first inning and held on for a huge 8-7 upset at Veterans Memorial Park.
The victory in the one-game playoff sends Herkimer to the best-of-three finals series against regular-season champion Ilion and also gives it an automatic berth to next week's District V Tournament regardless of the county championship outcome. The finals begin Wednesday at Ilion at 7:00. Game 2 is at Herkimer on Thursday and Game 3, if necessary, will be at Ilion on Friday.
Herkimer sent 11 batters to the plate in the first inning, scoring all seven runs against starting pitcher Evan Davis and knocking him out after just two-thirds of an inning. Danny Wiecek relieved and did an outstanding job holding Herkimer to just one more run, but despite having nine innings to work with instead of the usual seven, Little Falls' offense could not make up the difference.
Little Falls chipped away with two runs in the fourth, two in the sixth and three in the seventh and had the tying and go-ahead runs on base with two outs in the seventh, but Herkimer reliever Armand Viscomi recovered to strike out Andrew Gorinshek to escape the threat.
Viscomi pitched the final four innings for the save, preserving the win for starter Sean Tripp.
