Utica College football team loads up on local talent

UTICA, N.Y. - The Utica College football program will welcome 46 first-year student-athletes who played Section III high school football last season to campus this fall for its 2009 campaign. The Section III recruits include student-athletes from 29 different school districts in the Central New York region. Eight of the 46 student-athletes were members of Central New York or Mohawk Valley All-Region Teams last fall.

Nate Stewart (Bishop Ludden) was a Syracuse Post Standard All-Central New York First Team linebacker last season and he will be joined by All-CNY Second Team selections Steve Cavedine (West Genesee) and David Hildman (West Genesee). Tight end Brandon Miles (Oneida) was an Observer Dispatch All-Mohawk Valley First Team selection and a Syracuse Post Standard All-CNY Third Teamer, while Joey Rivers (Homer) was also an All-CNY Third Team selection. Kicker TJ Losowski (Westmoreland) was an All-Mohawk Valley First Team selection along with Luke Manolescu (Notre Dame) and Neal Baron (Westmoreland).

The Pioneers opened training camp on Saturday and a program-record 152 first year players are expected to report within the next two weeks.

Utica closed out its 2008 season with a 3-7 record, good for fourth place in the conference. The Pioneers lost eight seniors to graduation, six of whom were starters.
