UTICA, NY – The nationally-ranked No. 8 Utica College women’s hockey team defeated visiting No. 11 Amherst College 4-1 Sunday afternoon in non-conference action at the Memorial Auditorium.

The Pioneers took a 1-0 first period lead when senior defensemen Katie Moss (Rochester/Rochester) ripped a slap shot from just inside the blue line past Amherst freshman goalie Krystyn Elek (Lawrenceville/ Summervile, SC). Amanda Finkle (Little Caesars/Milford, MI) and Courtney Bank (Belle Tie/Saginaw, MI) each recorded an assist on the games first goal.

Deana Wiegand (Belle Tire/Utica, MI) gave the Pioneers a 2-0 lead 1:14 into the second period when she got loose on a break away and beat Elek blocker side. Senior captain Stephanie Price (Little Caesars/River Rouge, MI) and freshman defensemen Jessica Leclerc (Maine, Orono/Augusta, ME) assisted on Wiegand’s game-winning goal.

Just six minutes later Price hit a streaking Wiegand at the blue line and Wiegand took care of the rest scoring her sixteenth goal of the season. Leclerc notched her second point of the night with the assist.

Wiegand returned the favor when she connected with Price for the Pioneers fourth and final goal at 14:40 in the second period. Price leads the team with 18 goals this season and now has 120 career points in four seasons with the Pioneers.

Lindsey Harrington (Westford/Westford, MA) scored the lone goal for the Jeff’s 1:20 into the final period after UC goalie Stephanie Yates made a glove save but the puck bounced out of her glove and got loose in front of the net. Tes Siarnacki (Groton/Gardner, MA) and Elizabeth Ditmore (Benilde/Excelsior, MN) assisted on the Amherst goal.

Yates made 24 stops in her sixth win of the season, while Elek stopped 30 shots in 60:00 of work.

The Pioneers improve to 12-4-2 overall and return to action at Hamilton College February 6th. The puck is set to drop at 7 p.m.
