UTICA, NY – The Utica College women’s basketball team defeated Empire 8 rival Nazareth College 82-56 Friday night at the Clark Athletic Center.

The Pioneers got out to a fast start as they led 11-2 just under four minutes into the game after a lay-up from Laura Keating (Horseheads/Whitesboro), who finished the first half with 17 points. The Golden Eagles were forced to use their first timeout to try to solve the Pioneers early surge.

Nazareth continued to have no answer for the Pioneers offense when UC took a commanding 19 point lead after freshman Jessica Snyder (Jordan-Elbridge/Elbridge) put back her own lay-up with five minutes left in the first half. The Pioneers took a commanding 44-25 lead into halftime with much help from Ava Thomas (St. Raymond’s/Bronx) who grabbed 13 rebounds and tallied eight points in the first half alone.

The second half was more of the same, as the Pioneers would go up by as many as 37 points after a lay-up by Snyder with 8:44 left to play. That was the largest lead of the game.

Laura Keating finished with a game-high 22 points while Ava Thomas tallied 17 points and 17 rebounds. Dana Danzinger (Point Pleasant/Point Pleasant, NJ) had 10 points and nine assists while Mallory Davis (Rockville/Vernon Rockville, CT) added 12 points of her own.

Whitney Smith (Webster Thomas/Webster) had a team-high 16 points and Stephanie Bowens (Nazareth Academy/Rochester) added 12 points for Nazareth. With the loss, the Golden Eagles fall to 7-15 overall and 3-8 in the Empire 8.

With the win, the Pioneers improve to 15-7 overall and 7-4 in the Empire 8. The Pioneers will return to the court on Saturday, February 10th at 2:00 p.m. when they host RIT in Empire 8 action.
