WESTMORELAND, N.Y. (WKTV) - After winning the Section III, Class C championship last season, Westmoreland knocked off defending Class D champ Dolgeville 25-6 Saturday in the Class D South-East Conference Semifinals.
The Bulldogs, now 8-0 and ranked No. 1 in the state in Class D, will play No. 13 Notre Dame in the conference championship at a site, date and time to be announced Sunday. Westmoreland beat Notre Dame 44-12 in Week 1, which is the Jugglers' only loss of the season.
Saturday's appropriately-hyped matchup featured a Westmoreland team that had outscored its opponents 368-30 and a 15th-ranked, 6-1 Dolgeville team that had a margin of 235-46. The first half was plagued by rain, resulting in a tight battle with Westmoreland ahead 7-0 on a second-quarter Christian DeRoche 3-yard touchdown run and a half-closing defensive stand at its own 11-yard line. But when the rain cleared out for the second half, the Bulldogs bombed the Blue Devils in the air with Dan Smith throwing touchdown passes of six and 52 yards and finishing 12-of-20 for 249 plus a 1-yard rushing TD.
Westmoreland's aerial assault helped off-set an off-day for its running game, which was held to just 93 yards. But it was more than good enough as the Bulldogs' defense held Dolgeville to just 149 total yards of offense.
The Blue Devils' lone touchdown came on an 86-yard kickoff return by Alex Snyder after Westmoreland went up 25-0.
Smith's TD passes were to DeRoche and Justin Becker, respectively. The defense was led by Brandon Jones' 10 tackles, two assists and one sack, Mark Russell's seven tackles and two assists and DeRoche's six tackles and one assist.
The victory completes Westmoreland's second straight undefeated season on its home field. The Bulldogs' last loss there, according to head coach Tim Gates, was a playoff defeat in 2007.
