ENDICOTT, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Whitesboro Warriors (10-1) have won the Class A State Quarterfinal against Corning East, 27-19. They will now move on to play against Sweet Home (11-0) next Friday night in Rochester at 8:00 p.m.

The last time these two teams met was in 2005 at the very same stadium, Ty Cobb Stadium, and Corning East when on to win 35-14. The time around, a much different story ensued.

After trailing 13-0 on two Jordan Drysinger touchdowns, Whitesboro went back to power football. They mounted nearly a quarter-long drive of 80 yards, capped off by a trick play touchdown pass from Chris Gibbs to Sean Jones. That move cut the lead to 13-7, Corning East leading.

With under two minutes to play in the first half and two timeouts, the Warriors marched right back down and scored on a Sean Jones touchdown pass to Mike Sullivan, giving Whitesboro a 14-13 lead at the half.

On the opening kickoff in the third quarter, Corning East made what turned out to be a fatal mistake. They kicked the ball to Steve Almond, the fastest player on the team. He would burn the Trojans for a 75 yard kickoff return for a touchdown, giving the Warriors a 21-13 lead.

In the fourth quarter, Whitesboro mounts another drive and Kevin Flannigan would rumble in for the four-yard score which would be the icing on the cake. Corning East would score again on a 12-yard run by Drysinger, but it was too little too late.

Whitesboro would recover the ensuing onside kick and run out the clock.

The Warriors improve to 10-1 and advance to the State Semifinals for the first time since 1996. Corning East will end their season at 8-3.
