On Saturday night, local area football coaches and other athletic leaders attended a reception at the Yahnundasis Golf Club in New Hartford to learn about a new camp for area youth developed by NFL star, Will Smith. A Proctor Graduate and New Orleans Saints Defensive Lineman, Will Smith is also in town this weekend to be inducted into the Greater Utica Hall of Fame. The camp developed by Will Smith, directors Jon Bryant and Emil Streeter is also partnered with Joe Martin and Cutting Edge Fitness Center.
The camp’s ultimate goal is to bring area kids the experience of football training that would typically be experienced only in college level football or the NFL. The organizers also wanted to note that the camp will also stress character building, being a good person and academics. One director of the camp, Jon Bryant, said that they want to teach kids that hard work does pay off and that everybody can be a good person, using Will as an example.
When asked why helping the area kids with this camp, Will Smith responded, “I think the area kids need this. It will help them progress as football players.” Will also wanted to stress that they will focus on things besides football such as grades and SAT scores.
Joe Martin, physical therapist and owner of Cutting Edge Fitness Center in Whitesboro was approached to join the group to bring in the performance enhancement aspect. Joe said, “Young football players with better understanding of performance enhancement and technique will make them faster, more powerful and more explosive athletes.”
The organizers are looking for people to donate to this great cause. Jon Bryant said, “This area supports everything and this is one more thing we hope they will support.” He is also requesting to get more local football leaders involved as well.
The camp will be held on June 30 at D’Alessandro Stadium at
