UTICA, N.Y.  - It took two unanswered goals in the third period for the nationally-ranked No.1 Oswego State men's hockey team to knock off host Utica College 5-4 in non conference play at the Utica Memorial Auditorium Tuesday night.  The Pioneers led 4-3 headed into the third period of play behind another outstanding evening from sophomore Tim Coffman (Elverson, Pa.), who netted one goal and added two assists.  Oswego was led by sophomore Eric Selleck (Shanley, Ontario), who totaled a game-high two goals for the Lakers.

Oswego has won ten straight contests and improved to 11-1 overall on the year, while the Pioneers have dropped three in a row and fell to 4-6-2 overall.  Oswego now owns an 8-3-1 all-time series advantage over Utica.

UC jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 8:20 of play behind goals from senior classmates Sean McKevitt (Clinton, N.Y.) and Vincent Nucci (Rochester, N.Y.).  McKevitt’s goal, a wrist shot from 12 feet out, was his second of the year and it was assisted by sophomore Brian Gibbons (Temple Hills, Md.) and freshman defender Robert Etts (Smithtown, N.Y.).  Nucci’s goal, which gave UC the 2-0 lead, came off a rebound after Coffman sent in the initial shot that was saved by Laker goalie Kyle Gunn-Taylor (West Seneca, N.Y).

Oswego answered right back with two goals in a span of 2:48 mid-way through the first period to knot the score at 2-2 at the 13:25 mark.  Luke Moodie (Burlington, Ontario) scored his sixth goal of the season off assists from Hank Van Boxmeer (Orange, California) and Jon Whitelaw (Huntsville, Ontario) before Tyler Lyon (Foxboro, Ontario) added an unassisted goal, his fourth of the season, to tie the score up.

Oswego took its first lead of the contest 3:12 into the second stanza when Eric Selleck lit the lamp, off an assist from senior Brad Dormiedy (Ajax, Ontario), to give the Lakers a 3-2 advantage.

Utica would not be put away easy as they regained the lead after two consecutive goals in a span of 2:46 mid way through the second period.  Freshman Eric Peterson (Newton, N.H.) tied the contest up at 3-3 when he knocked home his fifth goal of the season right in front of the net on the Pioneer power play.  Coffman and freshman Kyle Zobler (Millbury, Ma.) were each credited with an assist on Peterson’s goal.  Coffman gave UC a 4-3 lead when he slammed home a rebound, his team-high eighth goal of the season, in the 12th minute after a breakaway opportunity by Zobler was saved by Gunn-Taylor.

Oswego commanded the third period of play and netted two goals to earn the key non conference victory.  Selleck tallied his second of the evening, and team-high 11th of the year, just 4:33 into the final stanza to tie the score at 3-3.  Justin Fox (Whitby, Ontario) added the game-winner, unassisted, in the ninth minute to close out the scoring on the day.

Senior goalie Anthony Luckow (Shelby TWP, MI) stopped a game-high 31 shots in net for the Pioneers, while Gunn-Taylor made 16 saves in his eighth victory of the season.

Oswego outshot the Pioneers 36-20 on the day and each team netted one power-play goal.

Utica returns to action on Saturday when they host the fourth annual New York Sash Teddy Bear Toss against Castleton State at 7 p.m.  Fans who bring a stuffed animal to the game will receive free admission and when the Pioneers score their first goal fans can throw the stuffed animals out onto the ice for collection and distribution to local children throughout the holiday season.  Live audio, video and stats will be available for the contest at
