SUNYIT runs over UC

UTICA, N.Y  - SUNYIT outscored host Utica College 44-18 in the second half en route to a 76-42 victory over the Pioneers on the hardwood at the Clark Athletic Center on Wednesday night. The Wildcats shot 65.4% (17-of-26) from the floor in the second half as they completed the season series sweep of the Pioneers. Junior forward David Golembiowski (Barneveld, N.Y.) led the way for the Wildcats (10-4) with 24 points and 11 rebounds, while Diloo Brown (Harlem, N.Y.) added 15 points, nine assists and seven rebounds.

Headed into this season the Pioneers (6-9) boasted a nine game winning streak against the Wildcats and the last time Utica lost two straight to SUNYIT was in the 2003-04 campaign.

In Wednesday night’s contest SUNYIT jumped out of the gates quick and never looked back. Golembiowski scored 17 of the Wildcats first 28 points as they took a 16 point advantage, 28-12, in the first 12:43 of the contest. Utica used a 12-4 run in the final seven minutes to cut the lead to eight, 32-24, as the first half buzzer sounded.

SUNYIT opened the second half on a 14-2 over the course of the first 6:13 to take a 20 point lead, 46-26. The Wildcats did not let down and extended their lead to as many as 36 points before the final horn sounded. The Pioneers were held to 7-of-25 shooting from the floor in the second half including a dismal 0-of-11 from 3-point land.

Junior guard James Patterson (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) led the way for Utica with 10 points and five rebounds. Pat Goodman (Marcy, N.Y.) added nine points and six rebounds, while Jeff Ward (Ossining, N.Y.) scored five points and grabbed five rebounds off the bench.

Four players scored in double figures for SUNYIT including Golembiowski, Brown, Aaron Swancott (Boonville, N.Y.) and Kevin Cappiello (Youngsville, N.Y.).

Utica returns to action on Sunday when they host Empire 8 Conference foe Alfred University at 2 p.m. SUNYIT returns home on Saturday to take on Penn State Berks at 4 p.m.
