UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Jared Suderley led a West Canada surge, leading the Indians to a spectactular 67-65 overtime win Friday night in the Section III Class C-2 Final at the Utica Memorial Auditorium. The NEWSChannel 2 Athlete of the Week scored 27 of his 35 points in the second half and the extra period to help the Indians recover from what was as much as a 14 point deficit.
Suderley battled the leading scorer in Section III, Connor Caldwell, who had 23 points for the Cavaliers. In fact, the two traded baskets at the end of regulation, with Caldwell hitting the go-ahead score with seconds left in regulation. But Suderley matched it, scoring with 16.4 to go, and forcing overtime.
The West Canada senior then hit a pair of three point shots in the extra frame, as well as two free throws, to give his team a two point lead with a few seconds left. Brian McGovney attemped one last shot, which was no good, sealing the win for the Indians.
An emotional Suderley said after the game was over, "You play varsity for three years so I told coach to get me the ball, I got a lot of experience in games like this. Once we were down, I told my teammates to get me the ball, give me a touch every time on offense and good things will happen and it did. Whoo!"
His excitement was shared by most of the Aud fans, at least the ones wearing purple.
