Redeemer Cup Soccer Tournament bringing cultures together under common sport

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Soccer fans are arriving in droves in South Africa for the start of the World Cup on Friday.

However, you don't have to go to South Africa to see great soccer, as The Redeemer Cup is happening at Proctor Park in Utica this weekend.

16 teams representing 16 different countries are taking part in the tournament.

"I think it's really about bringing the community together," Utica Mayor David Roefaro said. "That is what the Redeemer Church is trying to do - bring the community together and to be one. We have so many nationalities in our school district, we speak 42 different languages, so we have a very diverse population here."

The soccer tournament is happening this coming weekend, with an opening ceremony at 10 a.m. On Saturday at Proctor Park.

The event is free and open to fans.
