ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) - The long-awaited debut of the Utica Comets got off to a rough start, as the Comets fell to the Rochester Americans, 4-1.
The Comets outshot the Americans 31-21.
Luke Adam (2-0-2) and Jamie Tardiff (0-2-0) led the charge with two points apiece, for the Americans. Dan Catenacci, and Kevin Sundher each added a goal in the Americans victory. Joe Cannata made 18 saves the for Comets.
The first period got off to a raucous start, with Comets fans making their presense known right away. That happy feelings for the Comets faithful disappeared just 6:32 into the game, as Dan Catenacci put one past Cannata, on assists from Jerome Gauthier-Leduc, and Colton Gillies. With just :17 left in the period, Luke Adam added his first goal of the game, second of the year, on a feed from Jamie Tardiff and Chad Ruhwedel. Shots for both teams were even at 10.
The second period saw a heavy attack from the Comets, who outshot the Americans 11-4 in the period, however, they could not find a way to put a puck past goaltender Matt Hackett. At the 10 minute mark, Rochester stretched its lead to 3-0, as Kevin Sundher scored on a low angle shot from just above the goal line in the corner.
The Americans added a fourth tally to their score with Luke Adams second goal of the night, a powerplay goal 7:04 into the final period. The Comets ended Hackett’s shotout bid with 6:32 remaining, as Pascal Pelletier scored the first goal in franchise history, with assists from Alex Biega and Peter Andersson.
The Comets went 0-for-3 on the Powerplay, and killed off 4-of-5 penalties. The two teams combined for 44 penalty minutes.
Darren Archibald led all Comets with five shots in the game. Hackett stopped 30 of the Comets 31 shots.
The Comets next game is 5:00 p.m. Saturday night, in Albany.
