BROWNVILLE, N.Y. (AP) - A 5,000-pound roll of paper fell on a 26-year-old upstate New York paper mill worker, crushing him to death.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Department says Scott Ellsworth of Brownville was pinned under a roll of industrial grade paper about 5:20 a.m. Wednesday at the Brownville Specialty Papers plant, located about 80 miles north of Syracuse.

Sheriff John Burns says rescuers had to inflate air bags to lift the paper off. The sheriff says Ellsworth was dead when emergency workers arrived.

The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating.
