Salt surplus saves close to a million dollars

By WKTV News

Oneida County, N.Y. (WKTV) - The first snowfall for many municipalities means vehicles are out plowing the roads and laying down salt.

After the unusually mild winter we had last year, State DOT officials said there is an abundance of salt leftover.

"We are starting off with a supply already on hand that we are using before we need to purchase any for the season and our facilities were full at the start of the season," said Robert Rice, Regional Director of Operations from State DOT.

Last year, only about half of the salt supply was used. This year, the leftovers will be spread before any new purchases are made. Officials estimate a savings of close to $800,000.

State DOT officials said they won't need to order new salt until the new year.
