MORELIA, Mexico (AP) - The prosecutor's office for Mexico's Michoacan state says nine bodies have been found in a remote area where drug cartels, vigilantes and federal forces have been fighting much of this year.
Prosecutor's spokesman Alejandro Arellano says the nine were found together Saturday on abandoned property near the town of Buenavista Tomatlan. They had gunshot wounds and their hands were tied.
The area near the Jalisco state border has seen conflict since earlier this year, when self-defense groups began rising up against the Knights Templar cartel, which has controlled the area through violence and extortion. Authorities say some self-defense groups are supported by a rival cartel, Jalisco New Generation, which is fighting for Knights Templar territory.
Arellano says a sign with the bodies indicates they may have belonged to Knights Templar.
