Abandoned single-engine plane traced to pilot

GUILDERLAND, N.Y. (AP) - A small plane found abandoned in rural Albany County has been traced to a 75-year-old pilot who had crashed it and planned to return to tow it away.

Fred Jackson tells the Albany Times Union ( ) that he quietly left his single-engine Piper Clipper in the trees on an Altamont property a week ago because he didn't want to report the incident to the Federal Aviation Administration. He was flying from Hamilton in Madison County. He said he had run into engine trouble coming into a nearby landing strip.
Residents found the plane Saturday and reported it to Guilderland police, who tracked down Jackson at his home in Niskayuna.
Jackson said he just hadn't gotten around to moving the plane. He said he plans to repair it and get it back in the air.
