Art students get exposure to a new medium: glass

By WKTV News

HERKIMER, NY (WKTV) - High School art students in Herkimer are learning a rare art- the art of glass fusing.

Art teacher Heather McCutcheon wrote and received a grant through CNY Arts.

As a result, Herkimer Art classes, grade 9-12 have the chance to work with a local artist whose work is known across the nation.

Tina Betz, does her work right in her home in Sauquoit.

She says this is the perfect opportunity for students to get a taste of something they don't normally see in their day to day art classes.

"most local students don't have a glass program so its definitely an added benefit to them," she said.

Their teacher, Ms. McClutcheon said, " I want the kids to come up with something different, something more fun and more interesting whether its a hobby or a career. just knowing theres something more out there than just an art teacher. its exciting to me and something different to create.

On Tuesday, Betz will return to the school, then at the end of the month, she'll do a flame demonstration.
