ITHACA, N.Y. - Derek Bard, a junior at New Hartford, won the NYSPHSAA golf title Monday, shooting a three under 69 on the second and final day of the state tournament, winning by five strokes.  Bard became the first golfer from Section III to win the state title in 20 years and the first from the Mohawk Valley since Mark Jorgensen, another former Spartans, did it in 1979.

Bard's brother Alec, an eighth grader, also competed at states, finishing tied for 20th.  Notre Dame's Mike Kalil tied for 24th, while Whitesboro's Joel Jakubowicz tied for 38th.

Competing in his fourth state tournament, Derek rebounded from a 74 in Sunday's first round, which left him tied for fifth.  Bard won his third straight Section III title and now heads for the Federation Tournament, at Bethpage Black.
