Chief: Western fire started on porch, exact cause under investigation

WESTERN, N.Y. (WKTV) - An investigation is underway to determine the cause of a house fire in the Town of Western. The fire started around 4:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon on Hillside Road.

Two grandsons of the owner were there at the time, one teenager and one adult. They tried putting the fire out themselves before calling 911. Both suffered some smoke inhalation but refused treatment at the scene.

The chief of the Western Fire Department, Mike Anania, says a firefighter who lives close by was able to ensure everyone was out of the home by the time fire crews arrived.

It was a losing battle from the start, the home was engulfed in flames by the time crews arrived. "We pulled up on the scene and the house was pretty well involved," said Chief Anania. "It was coming from the southside of the building."

Heavy fire was not the only hurdle they had to overcome. "There were propane tanks in the back which had exploded and also the problem that we had was downed power lines right out in front of the building in front of the house there, it created a little problem for us," said Chief Anania.

Mutual aid was called in from West Leyden and Boonville.

Chief Anania says the fire started in the outside porch area. Now work will begin on overhaul and the exact cause.
