Common core likely focus of tonight's education town hall

By WKTV News

(WKTV) - Dr. John King, the man who is charged with implementing the core curriculum at the state level in New York, will be part of the education town hall series scheduled for tonight in Whitesboro.

State Sen. Joseph Griffo's main goal for the series is to allow those with concerns regarding the education system the ability to address leaders in education.

King and Griffo will listen as concerned parents voice their opinions about educational topics -- specifically the common core.

"I think there's frustration by the parents because oftentimes they're feeling that the curriculum that's being delivered to their children is not always age appropriate," said Dave Langone, Whitesboro school superintendent.

One parent has spoken to WKTV on her concerns.

"The teachers are not being able to teach," said Michelle McSweeney. "They're being told this is what you have to teach and this is the time frame. And if the kids don't get it, then there's no extra time in their day at all."

The third part of the education series will be late next week.

Tonight's meeting is at 6:30 p.m. at Whitesboro High School. And while the common core curriculum will likely be the main focus, other education questions will be heard.
