Congressional candidates discuss issues as clock ticks to primary

ILION, N.Y. (WKTV) -- In two months, voters will head to the polls for the congressional primary where incumbent Congressman Richard Hanna and State Assemblywoman Claudia Tenney are squaring off.

They are vying for the Republican line for the 22nd congressional district seat.

Assemblywoman Tenney, (R) 101st Assembly District, is more focused on the primary since running against an incumbent has its challenges. While Rep. Hanna says his current congressional duties are at the forefront of his agenda.

The two Republicans are squaring off for the same seat, but when it comes to business- they both agree New York doesn't have the friendliest environment.

"Top-down state government with tons of bureaucracy and the bureaucracy tends to crowd out our individual rights, our rights as small business owners, makes our taxation very high and our regulations are very high and so that's a huge problem for small business owners," said Tenney.

"New York is an awful place to do business. It's just so hard. We're number one in taxes, property taxes, school taxes, sales taxes, gas taxes," said Rep. Hanna.

It's the issue at the forefront of both their campaigns. If elected, Tenney says she'll work to whittle down big government.

"First thing we need to do is reduce taxes and reduce the size of government. That's been my pitch ever since I started because that's what we need to do in order to create jobs," said Assemblywoman Tenney.

Two term incumbent Hanna says he will continue to draw on his experience of being a local businessman for three decades to boost the area.

"Trying to grow Griffiss, trying to help with the Nano center, supporting those things that make sense. Trying to find things on a national level that makes it easier for businesses to do business," said Rep. Hanna

Republican Michael Kicinski is also challenging Tenney and Hanna. There are no Democratic challengers for the 22nd Congressional seat.
