Cuomo 'shares the outrage' of Zimmerman verdict

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo says he shares "the outrage at the apparent travesty of justice" in the jury decision which acquitted George Zimmerman in the shooting death of an unarmed black teenager.

Cuomo says Monday that he understands the "outrage" that the system failed in the case.

But the Democrat also says the criminal justice system must be respected.

Zimmerman, who identifies himself as Hispanic, said he fired in self-defense.

Rallies in New York on Sunday were largely peaceful as demonstrators supported the family of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin and decried the verdict. New York police said at least a dozen people were arrested on disorderly conduct charges during a rally in Times Square.

Former Democratic Gov. David Paterson supported a call Monday by New York's congressional Democrats for a federal investigation.
