Driver safe after car fire on arterial in Utica

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - According to witnesses, a driver and his passenger narrowly escaped a fire that completely engulfed their Volkswagon Jetta shortly after Noon on Tuesday.

The driver said he was traveling south on the arterial in the City of Utica when he drove over a large piece of metal in the road, adding that the piece of metal then struck and pierced his gas tank.

As he struggled to get off the arterial and onto Court Street, smoke started coming from the trunk and then flames overtook the car, those at the scene said.

The car was destroyed, but the driver said he was alright.
