(WKTV) - Autumn, the boxer mix dog found wandering and nearly starved to death in West Utica on Thursday, is improving, but the next few days are still critical to her survival.
Autumn was found wandering west Utica with a shoelace tied around her neck. She was only 26 pounds -- about half the weight she should be at 3-4 years old, which is the age staff at Stevens Swan Humane Society estimate her to be. Her ribs were clearly visible beneath her skin when she was brought to the humane society.
Staff at the humane society say Autumn was upbeat and happy to see the staff caring for her on Friday morning. But they say she still has bone fragments in her G.I. tract and she must pass those. Autumn is on a special diet for now.
Officials at the humane society say medical care is costly, and the many donations they've received for Autumn are helping pay for her care and allowing them to give her every opportunity to survive. The community has rallied around the abandoned dog, with nearly 2,000 shares of her photo from the shelter's Facebook page and hundreds of comments.
