Former Otsego County employee charged with eavesdropping

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (WKTV) - A former employee of Otsego County has been charged after authorities say he secretly recorded his co-workers in 2010.

The Otsego County Sheriff's Office says that in October 2012, they received a formal complaint from a county employee regarding having his conversation secretly taped by Jonathan G. Allen, 24, a former employee at the Otsego County Department of Social Services, back in April 2010.

During the investigation, investigators located and recovered the digital voice recorder used in the incident and conducted interviews of Social Service employees regarding the incident. After consulting with the D.A.'S Office, Allen was charged with eavesdropping, which is a felony.

Allen surrendered himself at the Sheriff's Office on Thursday morning and was issued an appearance ticket returnable to the Village of Cooperstown Court next month.

If convicted Allen could face up to four years in state prison.
